What to Eat and Drink when Having the Flu?


With the flu season widespread, it is important to be prepared in case you or someone you know becomes infected.  Florida Today has put together a list of foods and drinks that can possibly help ease and shorten your recovery.   

MedFast Urgent Care has 11 locations throughout Brevard to help serve you and your cold/flu needs.

Sports Drinks – Important for hydration and restoring electrolytes, especially when having a fever.

Green Tea –Filled with antioxidants and also can assist with hydration. *Adding honey to it can help ease a sore throat.

Chicken Noodle Soup – Classic and comforting food for sickness, which is loaded with vitamins.

Peas or Beans – Protein can assist in the healing process, by helping to build your strength back.  When fighting the flu, plant-based protein can be easier on the stomach than meat.

Colorful Fruits and Veggies – Colorful veggies are loaded with antioxidants that can boost your immune system.

Orange Juice – Great source of Vitamin C, which might help with shortening the duration of the flu.  However, try not to overdo it, since too much can make you feel worse.

BRAT Foods - This can help ease an upset stomach.  These types of foods include your bananas, rice, applesauce, toast.

Ginger – This is an inflammatory root that can also help to relieve stomach problems. 

Fortified Breads and Cereal – These contain Vitamin B12, which can boost energy.  *Examples: whole grain bread, eggs, whole grain cereals, unsweetened oatmeal, and granola.
